UN to appoint Earth contact for aliens

Posted in politics, travel on September 26, 2010 by saramurray

THE United Nations was set today to appoint an obscure Malaysian astrophysicist to act as Earth’s first contact for any aliens that may come visiting.

Mazlan Othman, the head of the UN’s little-known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa), is to describe her potential new role next week at a scientific conference at the Royal Society’s Kavli conference centre in Buckinghamshire.

She is scheduled to tell delegates that the recent discovery of hundreds of planets around other stars has made the detection of extraterrestrial life more likely than ever before – and that means the UN must be ready to coordinate humanity’s response to any “first contact”.

During a talk Othman gave recently to fellow scientists, she said: “The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that some day humankind will receive signals from extraterrestrials.

“When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject. The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination.”

Professor Richard Crowther, an expert in space law and governance at the UK Space Agency and who leads British delegations to the UN on such matters, said: “Othman is absolutely the nearest thing we have to a ‘take me to your leader’ person.”

However, he thinks humanity’s first encounter with any intelligent aliens is more likely to be via radio or light signals from a distant planet than by beings arriving on Earth. And, he suggests, even if we do encounter aliens in the flesh, they are more likely to be microbes than anything intelligent.

Flatulence, Faculty, and Foust

I was scrolling through authors at the Pennsound site after my classes today and came across the name of Lara Odell–you know, Logan Esdale’s wife? It was wedged just between Alice Notley and Charles Olson.

The site has actually inducted two of her video projects into its galleries, with one featuring none other than our dear friend Logan. The ever-pensive pedagogue here joins poet-rock star Graham Foust to discuss their latest publication: A 360 page book examining the consequences of the whoopie cushion in a post-modern age. It is a profound examination of flatulence during a time when “so much that happens, doesn’t really happen.”

This stuff is like, real life hilarious (segments with Charles Bernstein never hurt). But also incredible.

Humble Suggestions from the Future (the East)

Posted in food on November 6, 2008 by saramurray

Since it’s colder here than it is “over there,” I’ve gotten a bit of a head start on you guys with the seasonal treats. So here’s my advice:

Firstly, try squeezing a drop or two of honey into a short glass of SoCo. Microwave for 15 seconds and proceed to feel warm oozy and pleasant.

Secondly, make some vin chaud. I’ve never tasted anything so perfect. I’ve committed the recipe to memory so here:

Lightly pound the rind from half of an orange (the orange part. none of the white pith) with the back of a knife. Pour a bottle of wine into a sauce pan and heat on low. Add the orange rinds and squeeze some of the juice in too. Throw in 1/3 cup sugar, 1 stick cinnamon, 6-8 cloves, & 1/2 cup brandy. When it starts to smoke, it’s ready. Drink it from a mug.

You all should come to dc for the inauguration.

Having been separated from all of you beautiful people for almost a month now, I can’t help but occasionally wonder when I’ll next see you guys, and what it’ll be like. Maybe it will be a long long time–maybe not. I just hope the reunion will be as good as this one.

Forgive my sentimentality. This video made me weep just a little (The sound track doesn’t hurt, nor does The View’s commentary). Shiv, Kathleen, and Wes: I think you guys will especially enjoy this.

LOVE, sara.

Two penises are better than one.

An interesting supplement to Shiv’s gorgeous slug post. It also involves hermaphroditic worms, but in this case we leave out the serpentine cuddling. This is the story of an all out battle between two sexually confused combatants who must fence with the only weapons they’ve got (their penises) in order to earn the privilege of being a man! He who jabs first laughs last.

This is no Balderdash.
