Drinks on Me

Posted in A Put It Up Summer, friends, G&T's on August 20, 2010 by John

I know I’m not in a cocktail rut. I just had a very good day at Bev&Mo. I did see these two drinks and I felt compelled to post them. So just in case you are:

Cucumber-Rosemary Gin and Tonic

1 cucumber
1 lime
3 sprigs rosemary
2 oz. Hendrick’s Gin
4 oz. tonic water (preferably Q or Fever-Tree)
ice

Peel one half of a cucumber, and slice a lime into eight wedges. In a highball glass, add three slices of peeled cucumber, 1 sprig rosemary, juice from a lime wedge and 1 ounce gin. Muddle with the back of a spoon.

Strain through a mesh strainer into a second highball glass. Add several cubes of ice, and three slices of unpeeled cucumber. Top with remaining gin and tonic, and serve garnished with rosemary sprigs. VIA

Boulevardier

1 1/2 ounce rye (or bourbon)
3/4 ounce Campari
3/4 ounce sweet vermouth
lemon zest for garnish

Combine liquid ingredients in an ice-filled mixing glass and stir until cold. Strain into a cocktail glass. Squeeze your lemon zest over the surface of the drink, run it along the rim, and drop it into the glass. VIA

Warmer Days #2 Rhumba & Juju

Posted in 2010, A Put It Up Summer, africa, milkshakes, music on August 19, 2010 by John

A busy, lazy summer has left me with little time for music. I was at least happy to find these two albums.

A Retrospective, Vol.1 is Congolese soukous/rhumba, once again borrowing a lot from Cuban music. Franco is a phenomenal guitar player. He wanders around the song with slick, clever riffs he just seems to come up with. Perfect summer jams.

Adé is a little stranger. He and Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey were the two main Juju acts in Nigeria in the 70s and the rivalry between them led to push some boundries, and Juju Music is a great example of that.

Sadly not enough time to learn and dig. I need to get some Chief Commander. I feel like I’m only skimming the surface here with a couple “essential” albums. They are both very good though…  I’ll check back when I find something good.

Two albums for your late summer heatwave:

Posh Nosh is one of the funnier things I’ve seen in a while. British people are just funnier than us.

Here’s the other seven. If your like me, you’ll need an hour or so to waste.

Skeletal System are from San Francisco (I almost typed Brooklyn) and on their myspace, the first of their influences is Slowdive. I’ve liked the song “Dialogue” for a few weeks now, and the rest of the free EP I just found is (at this moment) living up to it. Some very quiet songs that remind me of Joy Division here, while others are lush and layered. It’s refreshing to hear a such a strong and earnest voice over all that synth.

other than that, I’ve been listening to most of the things that are put up on this blog. MillionYoung, Wild Nothing. Good stuff. Oh, and the new Walkmen’s obviously good.

I’m going on a 5 day roadtrip. What are you listening to!
