10 Movies, 2000-09

These movies are spectacular. I too don’t have much to say.

10. Bad Education (Almodovar, 2004)

9. Matchpoint (Allen, 2005)

8. Far From Heaven (Haynes, 2002)

7. There Will Be Blood (Anderson, 2008)

6. Inland Empire (Lynch, 2006)

5. Let The Right One In (Alfredson, 2008)

4. O Brother, Where Art Thou (Coens, 2000)

3. Mullholland Dr. (Lynch, 2001)

2. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days (Mungiu, 2007)

1. 2046 (Kar-Wai, 2005)

This movie is unreal. Shaking Wong Kar-Wai’s hand just after discovering his genius was also pretty cool. Here are a few more favorites:

-What Time is it There? by Ming-Liang Tsai
-The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan
-Elephant by Gus Van Sant
-I’m Not There by Todd Haynes
-Superbad by Greg Mottola

– Howl’s Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki

– The Cat Returns by Hiroyuki Morita

Elsewhere: Music lists? I’d love to see your guys’. Are there any 09 (formidably formal) festivities planned for things like this? I’ll see you soon John 🙂

  1. excellent list. if Safe was a 2000’s film, it tops my list. Far From Heaven was excellent as well though. I have voiced my opinion about There Will Be Blood before. i know many disagree with me.

The beautiful thing, here, is that we all seem to adore 2046; a film somewhat ignored by the mass critical community.

  2. Ok, here’s my list but these are my favorites, I don’t claim they are best. And I think there are 11-14 of them. And I haven’t seen Inland Empire or Let the Right one In and either one is likely to bump some shit.

    Grizzly Man
    No Country for Old Men
    In the Mood for Love
    Old Boy
    Adaptation
Kill Bill (throw ’em all in there)
Talk to Her (Also love Mala Educacion etc. (almodovar))
    Coraline in 3d
    Children of Men
    Punch Drunk Love
    Best in Show

Was anyone else stunned that High Fidelity came out in this decade. . .it seems so dated.

  3. Also like, I’m Not There, Elephant and Capote (sorry again shiv).

  4. Elephant was ever so close to being my number 10. i have had so many arguments about that film with people who hate it.

  5. also, and this is me getting controversial, i seem to have met more women who like In the Mood For Love over 2046 and vice versa. is there something to this? don’t get me wrong, i like both.
