Breastfeeding

A.O. Scott [the new co-host of At The Movies! – John] recently put an article in the Times discussing the way Hollywood has been treating us all like children these days. I guess I don’t have much more to say about it other than I agree. Check it out here. If you don’t feel like reading the whole thing, just watch the audio slide-show which sums it all up pretty well.

Thoughts? Are we too cranky? Is this just the reality of summer cinema these days?

  1. It has been an especially bad summer, and maybe that’s part of it.

But really you’re right. The biggest grossing film this year was a joke. Critics across the country panned Transformers 2 (there are some truly silly reviews out there), and it didn’t make a difference. Ebert wrote a similar article this weekend and noted that the core demographic reading film reviews is 50+.

A couple positive notes though; this could be the beginning of a tipping point, though it will be slow. Also there’s still TV which has been getting better and better dramas. Shows like the Sopranos, Lost and Mad Men are complete thoughts and are impressive to watch. They’re also losing money, so there you go.

  2. also, what’s with the image?

  3. uh, it was a picture of transformers. apparently its not any more. *taken down*

  4. That is cool about A.0. Scott getting himself on television. He has always been one of my favorite critics. We have our disagreements, but not too often.

The whole TV trend is hard for me to quantify. I know I will offend a lot of Lost fans out there, but the few I episodes i saw seemed fairly gimmicky and nothing special. The sheer number of devoted fans probably proves me wrong. I guess I’m just saying that this isn’t Twin Peaks we are talking about here (but what is).

Are they really losing money? That is news to me. I can see Mad Men having a hard time of it, although it seems like everyone and their mother are obsessed with Lost.

  5. As a society we eat what we are fed! We do not question enough. Until we do we will keep being fed shit!
