Fireplace Framing

Fireplace Framing : Winter 2008

This started out, back in November, as a pretty grim collection of songs. Tim Buckley, Scott Walker…Bob Dylan’s Dream may have been the opening track for my winter. That’s just how my Garden Grove neighbors influence my music sometimes. Then I spent more time on it than any of my mixes, which is, as some of you know, too much time, and realized that although this winter is spent in horrid waiting, it’s going pretty well. And I hope yours is too. So, I guess here are a few notes:

1. It’s a winter mix, not a Christmas mix, so I’ve made some decently secular choices. You might find a riff here or there purposefully alluding to Baby Jesus–Oh and one deal made with God (for our sake).  Lots of ghosts floating around tho. And a few skeletons.

2. No animal collective on this mix. Whoa. (But, as per my post below, Spring shall be heavy).

3. There are two “parts” to this mix. Two acts, if you will. But I have tried to make my sonic caesuras as audible as possible. (*See huge long Lou Reed track). The first half is a lot more lyrically based than the latter half, I’d say. I was playing around with some spoken wordings; suits the season, I’d say. What do you say?

4. This is a pocketbook of echos of lessons of love and life learnt in 2008. Good Riddance you great big fucked up year.

5. As for the cover art, I wish I had a fireplace (and a Sara, pjs and tea). I found a diagram online on how to build one. I also found a pretty amazing picture of snow in the desert. Bada-bongers.

6. I like this mix better than my previous ones. Album of the year? Its not too hard. And the final song has to be one of my favorites, ever. If you can make it.

  1. You got some fucking cover art too! Man, does everybody know how to slaughter with Photoshop!?

    Can’t wait to listen.

  2. I can already hear the entire tone of the mix by just reading the tracks. I particularly like the OMD/Kate Bush/Lou Reed triple wammy! Also, what better way to end any mix than with “The Other Side.” Always brings a little teardrop.

  3. Hi there! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance from an established blog. Is it very difficult to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have any points or suggestions? With thanks
